About

Here at High-Tech Green our philosophy is that modern technology brings much of value to our lives. Be it assistive technology that makes our lives simpler, more productive, or more independant. Or communication technology that makes it easier, or more engaging to keep in touch with geograpically dispersed friends and family members. Or just some new Gee Wiz gadget that enriches our own well being. All of these are important and valuable outcomes. However, we also believe that as consumers we must educate ourselves about the life cycle impact our technology has upon the world around us, and those people with whome we share planet Earth.

If you happen to be one of those people who can live more simply, and feel the best way you can help protect the planet is to forego any modern technology that is not essential to a safe and comfortable existance, then I commend your dedication and respect your choices. However, we believe that must continue to advance because we cannot know what tomorrow's technology may bring us. The printing press made knowledge a commodity available to all citizens. The light bulb extended the day so that tinkerers who tolled away in factories during the day could spend their evenings inventing the next big thing. The internet extended the reach of knowledge brought about by the printing press by eliminating geography as a boundry to information.

After considering all of the breakthroughs brought about by yesterday's technology, if all a new technology does is bring us a few hours of pleasure or entertainment, then it is still worthy of consideration. However, no matter how worthwhile a technology may be, that does not absolve us as inviduals, of the responibility to make wise choices when selecting the technology that we want to bring into our lives. We must consider the environmental and social cost in producing the technology. We must consider the ongoing environmental and social cost using the technology. And finally we must consider the cost of a technology at the end of its useful life.

We hope that you will find this site useful and occasionally entertaining.
